The city has earned the famous sobriquet Gateway of the South and Madras Central has been greatly instrumental in earning this title. A renowned architect of British India, Henry Irwin designed the building. Later on the main building was extended because numbers of passengers were increasing day by day but architecture of the building is similar to the original.
Central Chennai railway station has all the facilities required for the passengers. It has book stalls, cyber cafe, restaurants facilities available at the station itself. Accommodation facility is also provided there. Computerized reservation office is opened at the station to provide ticket to the passengers at great speed. One can also book online ticket through Indian railways site to travel in Chennai or other major cities of India.
A small shop containing essential commodities is present at the station. 15 platforms of the station handle long distance trains and 3 platforms manage the suburban trains.
One can catch bus, rickshaws or pre paid taxi to travel in and around the city from the bus stand located near railway station.
