Informaiton about Kanpur Central Railway Station

The Kanpur Central Railway Station is one of the most important and busiest railway station located in Uttar Pradesh state of India. It is built on Howrah – Delhi broad gauge route. More than 300 trains passes through this railway station and around 1.5 lakh passengers daily commute from the station. Kanpur Central is known as a very busy station of North Central Railways and it is connected with the Lucknow Suburban Railway (MEMU).

Kanpur city is India’s 12th most populous city with the approximate population of 3 million located in Uttar Pradesh. It is an important industrial hub in the state. The city has all the modern amenities such as wide road, flyovers, highways, hotels, shopping malls, multiplexes, airport and railway station etc. which are required to lead a good life.

Kanpur Central is included in ‘50 World-Class Railway Stations’ in the budget of former Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee. The station is being developed gradually, major changes will take place in the station in phases and an improved look of the station will be seen in coming days.

The station was constructed in 1928. When Kanpur Central station’s building was being constructed, it was inspired by Lucknow Charbagh Railway station’s building but due to lack of sufficient budget, Kanpur Central’s building could not be constructed as Charbagh Railway station. Lucknow’s Charbagh Railway Station was built by British in 1914.

According to proposed plan two escalators will be installed at the station to facilitate passengers. A large circulating area will be made available for passengers and all railway quarters located on the city side will be dismantled. Three-layered underground parking facilities will be constructed for vehicles which will ensure hassle-free driving for passengers coming in and moving out of the station. To ensure smooth traffic flow in and out of the station premises, the entry and exist points on the city side will be made separate. Appropriate lighting work will be done in the sub-way connecting different platforms. Cracks were developed on the older number one platform surface; to solve the problem a new platform surface has been built at the platform.

Massive improvement and major changes will be done at the station to make it a standard International railway station.

Earlier Kanpur Central station was suffering from water crisis but now regular water supply is being ensured by senior supervisors of mechanical, civil and electrical departments. The station has the facility of grievance cell where passengers can register their complaints about non-availability of drinking water.

Retiring room and dormitories are available at the station and there is plan to renovate them.

Kanpur Central station will have passenger facilitation center which will provide all required help such as retiring room, wheel chair booking for passengers who need them, sale of platforms tickets to the passengers and train enquiry, under one roof. There is also plan to build a passenger amenity center.

Token system is applied at the station for passengers which saves their time while getting the reservation done.

There are many good places in the city which must be seen by the visitors travelling in the city.
